‘My Leadership Journey in the Water Industry’
Professor Zhiguo Yuan has been a highly active and influential researcher in wastewater and water management for over 20 years. Having received his PhD degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Beijing University, China, he shifted his career in 1994 to wastewater management by taking a postdoctoral research fellow position at Ghent University, Belgium. In 1998, Prof Yuan joined the Advanced Water Management Centre at The University of Queensland, where he is the Director. A key feature of his research, in environmental engineering, is the essential integration of fundamental science with practical solutions, thereby achieving simultaneous impact across academia and industry. Prof Yuan has won over $40M in competitive research funding since 2001 and has led the development of so many more research initiatives both in Australia and Internationally. He has to date published over 500 papers including a paper in Nature (2013) and Science (2014), with over 12,000 citations. He is the founder of three biotechnology businesses and his research has delivered documented savings of over $400 million to the Australian water industry. Prof Yuan has been recognised for his outstanding research achievements and leadership through national and international awards with the most recent being awarded the highly prestigious ARC Australian Laureate Fellowship in 2017 and the 2015 ATSE Clunies Award. Zhiguo is an IWA Fellow, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) and was named as one of Engineers Australia’s Top 100 Most Influential Engineers.
